Two years ago, three of us drove to Saranac Lake and boarded the tourist train to Lake Placid. It was a wine-tasting trip featuring local wine, snacks, and a disc jockey. A lot of fun on a Saturday night.
I gave my daughter and son-in-law an anniversary present of a railroad trip from Utica, including a tour of a local brewery, which they enjoyed. And last summer I traveled with a Middleburgh senior citizens group to New Hampshire, where the highlight of the trip was a leisurely railroad trip along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, including a full-course turkey dinner while on board.
I would like to ask the bicyclists and hikers a question: what are you going to do when you can no longer ride a bicycle or hike because of age, disability, injury, or sickness? I hope you will continue to be able to enjoy the Adirondacks when this happens.
The state should realize that railroad service between Lake Placid and Old Forge would be a benefit to all of the Adirondacks.
