Earlier in the summer, readers weighed in on “secret spots” and the ethics behind sharing or publicising them. As we gear up for what is often the pinnacle of fall weekends, it seems more apparent that the secret’s out about the Eastern High Peaks and like Pandora’s box, there’s no going back. The question remains: what path to take?

RENEWED CALLS FOR HIGH PEAKS PERMITS: Lately, hiking from the Ausable Club/AMR property or the Loj (and other popular places) means aiming to pull in at 3 a.m. to claim a parking spot. And then there’s the increased trash on the trails and rise in ranger rescues. The craziness of it all has prompted fresh calls for action to address the problem, with permits coming back into the conversation. A Siena College poll reveals a majority of those surveyed are board with some type of limited-entry system. READ MORE
