Man drowns at Buttermilk Falls on Raquette

New York State Police say a man drowned at Buttermilk Falls on the Raquette River on Saturday. Following is a news release from the troopers.

On July 28, 2018, at approximately 3 p.m., New York State Police responded to North Point Road in the area of Buttermilk Falls in Long Lake for a report of a drowning. Upon arrival at the scene, Long Lake Rescue EMS personnel were attempting life saving measures on the victim, Scott J. Karlnoski, 43, of Churchville, NY. CPR was unsuccessful in reviving the victim.

An investigation at scene revealed Karlnoski was vacationing at nearby Forked Lake Campground with his family. At approximately 2:15 p.m. Karlnoski was observed jumping into the pool base at the side of the falls and then continued swimming closer to the plunge pool. Karlnoski then disappeared and was found unconscious approximately five minutes later in a shallow rapids area. Hamilton County Coroner Virginia Jennings responded to the scene and authorized the removal of the deceased to St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, NY. The autopsy date and time remain pending.
