Forest rangers rescued a woman who was hiking alone and lost the marked trail during a snow squall that delivered white-out conditions. Essex County 911 identified the subject’s cell phone coordinates and instructed her on how to get back on the trail. Due to weather conditions, forest ranger Kevin Burns hiked to the woman’s location to assist her off the mountain.

Forest rangers rescued a snowshoer who lost his way while exploring Algonquin Peak recently.Initially, the hiker lost the trail and could not find it due to high winds above treeline, according to the DEC. The hiker was unable to follow dispatcher instructions to use his compass and get back on the trail.

Hikers should note that trail apps can never replace a paper map; they’re useful tools, but they rely on phone batteries that can die. Especially in the winter, when batteries often die in the cold, it is important that hikers use apps to supplement their paper maps, not the other way around.
