Skiing Old Mountain Road

In March 2018, I skied Old Mountain Road with Barkeater Trail Alliance executive director Josh Wilson and former Explorer editor Phil Brown.

Phil was working on a pair of articles that appear in the January-February issue of the Explorer. Old Mountain Road is a 3.5-mile stretch of the Jackrabbit Trail that goes from North Elba to Keene. The main article by Phil is about skiing the trail. The other is about the legal dispute regarding it. A recent court decision has declared the 3.5-mile Old Mountain Road a town road, which means motorized access is allowed on the trail. However, town supervisors have said they don’t plan to allow snowmobiles on it, keeping it current use intact.

Above are photos we took on that trip. We’ll be posting Phil’s articles on this website in the coming weeks. Here is another photo gallery of the trail and a video of Phil talking about the dispute.
