The trail system consists of nearly five miles of groomed trails and another mile-long spur trail that connects to the currently shuttered Big Tupper Ski Area. The system is a big upgrade from where it started in 2008 when the main focus was skiing the golf course, which is owned by the town and leased to the Tupper Lake Country Club from the spring to the fall.
Beyond its historic intrigue, though, Newcomb's Camp Santanoni serves a more utilitarian purpose around two winter holidays and one March weekend: hot chocolate and a woodstove.
One of my go-to ski tours, especially early in the season, is the Hays Brook Truck Trail north of Paul Smiths. Although another ski tour begins across the road, I never bothered to check it out until last winter. Now I know what I was missing.
