It’s the end of February, but I’m skiing in a T-shirt. The sun blazes out of a bluebird Adirondack sky. The thermometer reads 58 degrees in the Sharp Bridge State Campground parking lot. Hard to believe that two weeks ago I needed four layers and a down vest to fend off the cold.
Ask a roomful of cross-country skiers to name the best backcountry tour in the Adirondacks and you’re sure to get a roomful of answers. But there’s little room for debate about the best new ski tour: Henderson Lake to Duck Hole.
When I’m looking for a quick shot of backwoods fun, a ski tour I can fit into a morning or an afternoon, I often opt for the Whiteface Landing trail. The six-mile round trip takes only two or three hours, but it’s a great escape into serene surroundings.
When the snow gets deep, so does the longing to get out into the woods—at least if you’re a snowshoer. Below are four winter hikes up mountains that offer magnificent vistas in different parts of the Adirondacks.

Happy day! An early, mid-November blizzard has graced our northern end of the Adirondacks with nine inches of snow. Last weekend we were hiking these trails at the state’s Visitor Interpretive Center at Paul Smiths. Today we’ll be skiing on them.
