The Upper Works Road in Newcomb is one of the most interesting roads in the Adirondacks. It is the southern entrance for many of the High Peaks, historic buildings from the former mining village of Tahawus are located alongside it, and the scenic Hudson River can be found nearby. To me, this is the most magical spot in the Adirondacks. Trailheads to the High Peaks, fascinating history, a ghost town, the former Tahawus settlement moved to Newcomb, industrial archeology, the aptly named Calamity Brook, Opalescent River, a Great Camp, and the source of the Hudson River.
Plus: an old railroad corridor that may soon be converted to a rail trail connected to North Creek and Saratoga Springs.
