There’s perhaps no better time for paddling, hiking and taking photographs in the Adirondack Park than September, and we tried to take advantage of that fact with a few trips into the backcountry for stories.
We visited the Five Ponds Wilderness with Adirondack 46ers Trail Master Sam Eddy, who is being featured in the Trailblazer column for the November issue. I visited North Country Community College students in the St. Regis Canoe Area for a feature about their wilderness recreation program, and we went up Bear Den Mountain in Keene Valley to see the site of the 1999 Noonmark fire.
Photographically, this is an inspiring time of year, and not just for fall colors. Spider webs are in abundance, lakes and ponds are often still and reflective, and mornings can be eerily foggy. Check out the photo gallery above to view a few of the scenes we encountered.
