Somehow peak foliage is already gone in the Adirondacks, sneaking up on most of the park last weekend, seeming to come at least a week earlier than in previous years.
The peak foliage coincided with a huge hiking weekend recently and some chaos, too. This week we’ve been reporting on search and rescues and a hiker who drove his truck to Marcy Dam.
Normally the end of September is busy, but not this busy. Usually, the biggest crowds of the year come on Columbus Day weekend, which coincides with Canada’s Thanksgiving. This year, though, it will be interesting to see what the scene will be that weekend with the leaves already coming down and the Canadian border closed.
I’m also curious to see if the hiking crowds will continue into the late fall and winter months, when colder weather makes going into the mountains more challenging and potentially dangerous for those who are inexperienced.
