New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Paul A. Karas today announced the scheduled Thursday reopening of Route 30 following the completion of a culvert repair that closed six miles of the highway for a month between Long Lake, Hamilton County, and Tupper Lake, Franklin County a vital sitting between two tourist destinations in the North Country.
“We are pleased to be reopening Route 30 in time for Memorial Day, ensuring that residents and travelers can get to where they want to go for this busy holiday weekend,” Commissioner Karas said. “Construction crews worked seven days a week to expedite the project and support the mobility of this important North Country economic corridor, minimizing impacts to both motorists and area wildlife.”
Route 30 will reopen to traffic at 5 p.m. Thursday, a day ahead of schedule. The road was closed on April 25 to allow for the replacement of a failing culvert in Long Lake before road damage or washout occurred. The 42-inch-diameter,186-foot-long culvert was replaced with an 84-inch-diameter culvert, hardening the culvert with increased flood flow capacity to mitigate future storm events.
The new culvert also improves conditions for fish and wildlife. It sits lower than the stream bed, allowing for stream bed material to be placed on the bottom of it, easing the transition from the outside and making it little different from the natural stream bottom. The culvert also provides a larger passage area for aquatic life than the previous one did, making it more in keeping with natural stream conditions.
