Campaign for Quiet Waters

The Adirondack Explorer needs your help in its Campaign for Quiet Waters. Our goals, set forth below, are attainable via the state planning process currently under way.

We'll add your name to our petition to Governor Pataki and also keep you posted about where you can write or call for maximum effect. (Please include your name and address if you contact us by e-mail.)

Motorized use of these waters would be limited to electric motors only, with a 5 mph speed limit posted and enforced. (Pre-existing landowners would be exempted.)

The interconnected ponds adjoining the St. Regis Canoe Area: Floodwood, Rollins, Whey, Follensby Clear, Horseshoe, Polliwog, Little Polliwog, Little Square, Middle, Cooperas, Rock, East Pine, West Pine-12 mi. total.
South Inlet on Raquette Lake-2 mi.
Eighth Lake in Fulton Chain-1.5 mi.
Weller Pond and channel connecting with Middle Saranac Lake-2 mi.
Osgood River from Osgood Pond to Meacham Lake-8.5 mi.
Forked Lake on the Old Forge/Saranac Lake canoe route-6 mi.

Motorized use of the following waters would continue, but with a 5 mph speed limit posted and enforced.

Raquette River from Raquette Falls to Simon Pond-22 mi.
Jessup River Arm of Indian Lake-8 mi.
Dead Creek Flow on Cranberry Lake-3 mi.
Marion River between Eckford Chain and Raquette Lake-4 mi.
Putnam Pond adjoining Pharoah Lake Wilderness-2 mi.
