When Tropical Storm Irene changed the face of much of the Adirondacks, Explorer Editor Phil Brown was the first to arrive at and describe some of the backcountry areas most dramatically impacted by the storm, from the breached dam at Duck Hole (shown above) to newly scoured slides on Wright Peak and Mt. The Adirondack Explorer’s July/August issue has gone to press and will soon arrive in subscribers’ mail.

The cover story describes a hike and paddle excursion to the lovely and remote Duck Hole in the High Peaks. Editor Phil Brown puts in at Henderson Lake, with its spectacular mountain views, and then paddles and carries his solo canoe to Duck Hole, a favorite resting place on the Cold River for hikers travelling the Northville-Lake Placid Trail.

Other stories include a profile of influential Adirondack ecologist Jerry Jenkins, an examination of the damage extensive flooding has done to property and water quality in the Park, and a look into studies of wolf genetics that could influence the debate on whether wolves should be restored in the Adirondacks.

This issue also contains an update on the lawsuit against Brown over the public’s right to paddle on navigable rivers running through private property. New York State Supreme Court Justice Richard Aulisi conducted a hearing in May on the state attorney general’s motion to intervene in the case on behalf of the public’s right of access. Aulisi reserved judgment on the motion, which Brown and the Explorer supported.

The Explorer has also further enhanced its electronic offerings. We have greatly expanded The Adventure Planner, a digital collection of stories, maps and photos covering excursions to hundreds of destinations. A new interactive map makes planning easy and fun. The Adventure Planner is now available to Explorer subscribers only. The digital edition of the Adirondack Explorer is now up and running!
A full electronic version of the print Explorer with all the stories, photos and page-by-page design of the print magazine, the digital Explorer can be read on your iPad, PC or Mac. Soon it will be available for iPhones and other portable devices.
In addition to all the content of the print edition, the electronic version brings features that only digital publications can provide, including immediate delivery, vivid reproduction of images, search functions and easy archiving.
The digital Explorer is produced and distributed by a company called Zinio which handles electronic editions of hundreds of publications, including some of the biggest magazines in the world. Unfortunately, just as we were launching our service with the March issue, Zinio experienced severe technical problems and was out of service for two weeks. It is now fully operating again. If you tried to access the digital Explorer during the time Zinio was out of service and could not do so, please try now.

Welcome to the first Dispatches, an occasional newsletter created to keep our friends informed about news of the Adirondack Explorer, your nonprofit voice for the Adirondacks.

As we approach spring our March/April issue has arrived in subscribers’ mailboxes, we have weathered an impressive series of storms, both rain and snow, and are trying to squeeze in more ski and snowshoe adventures before we pull out the paddles and hiking boots.

Readers will learn in the pages of the current Explorer of a major challenge we face this year. Our coverage of the legally dubious practice by some private landowners of blocking access to navigable waterways has led to dramatic events. In the fall, the state declared that one such waterway, Shingle Shanty Brook, is legally open for public use. The state asked landowners to remove cables that block access. Those landowners have now sued our editor, Phil Brown, for trespass and they’re seeking a court declaration that they can keep the brook private.

Since publication of the March issue, we have learned that the New York State Attorney General has filed a legal motion seeking to intervene in the case on the side of Brown and the Explorer.

”The public has a right to travel and enjoy this beautiful waterway without being stopped or harassed,” said Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. “I will not hesitate to defend the public’s right to travel on these or other navigable waters. My office will work closely with the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to ensure that the public can once again enjoy this waterway – which connects two state-owned wilderness areas in the Adirondack Park.”

A court hearing on Schneiderman's motion is scheduled for May 17 before Supreme Court Justice Richard Aulisi in Fulton County.

The lawsuit may clarify and strengthen the public's right to navigation on New York's waterways, a prospect that seems even more likely if the state is allowed to participate.
