At the Adirondack Explorer, we comb through the many happenings in the Park to select those that we think will interest you most.

July/August 2004 Events
Feel-good music
You don’t really need an excuse to listen to Los Lobos, Rosanne Cash, Guy Clark, Buckwheat Zydeco and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, but if you attend the Songs at the Lake Music Festival this summer you will be contributing to cancer research. The Olympic Regional Development Authority is co-sponsoring the two-day festival with City of Hope, one of the world’s foremost cancer labs. The jamming kicks off at the Olympic speedskating oval in Lake Placid on Saturday, July 31. Other artists include Patty Larkin, Steve Forbert, Tom Rush, Little Feat and Rodney Crowell. Tickets are $45 per day or $79 for both days. For more information, including schedules, phone (800) 544-3541 or visit www.songsatthelake.org.

Adirondack Explorations
Those who visit or reside in the Old Forge and Inlet region will have a lot more to do this summer. Locals have formed a non-profit organization, Adirondack Explorations, that offers a variety of guided outings, from biking and hiking to birding and canoeing. The organization also sponsors lectures on history, photography, gardening and other topics. And all for free! For more information, call (866) 464-6538 or visit
www.adirondackexplorations.org.

Portrait of an artist
David Tatham, professor emeritus at Syracuse University, wrote the book on the influence of the Adirondacks on Winslow Homer, one of the nation’s greatest painters. (Winslow Homer in the Adirondacks was reviewed in the Explorer in October 1999.) Tatham will be discussing Homer and signing copies of his book at the Adirondack Museum on Monday, Aug. 23. Starting at 7:30 p.m., the lecture costs $3. For more information about exhibits and other programs at the museum, call (518) 352-7311 or visit www.adirondackmuseum.org. Incidentally, the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown will be displaying Homer’s Adirondack paintings through Sept. 6. Adirondack photos
You’ve seen Mark Bowie’s photographs in the pages of the Adirondack Explorer. Now they’ll be gracing the walls of the Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek. His exhibit “The Adirondacks: Large, Wet & Wild” will run through July 30. Admission is free. Bowie also will be on hand for a multi-format presentation, “The Adirondack Experience,” on Wednesday, July 7, starting at 8 p.m. This will cost $7 for adults and teenagers and $3 for children under 12. For more information, call (413) 442-9125 or visit www.markbowie.com.
